Who Do You Wear Purple For?

June officially marks Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a worldwide awareness campaign that organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association promote in efforts to cultivate a better understanding of what Alzheimer’s/Dementia is, the rapidly increasing impact it is having on our senior population, it’s warning signs & symptoms, steps for prevention, & resources & techniques for living effectively with the disease following diagnosis.

This year’s campaign includes celebrities holding up signs that indicate who they’re wearing purple for, such as “for my dad & grandfather,” “for my Aunt Rose,” “for my grandmother & great-grandmother,” & “for my mom & dad.” It’s a very effective approach for raising awareness, because it showcases how widespread the effects of this disease have become on families all over the world, from all walks of life. Everyone with a brain is at risk for developing this disease, and if you don’t yet have a loved one effected by Alzheimer’s/dementia, the odds are unfortunately good that you soon will. More than 5 million people living in the US currently have Alzheimer’s disease, & that number is projected to steadily grow to 16 million by the year 2050. Alzheimer’s disease is quickly becoming a global crisis, which is why it is so important to learn all we can about this disease & to actively participate in the worldwide effort to annihilate it.
